Jennifer Phillips earned her BFA at the University of Texas at Tyler and her Masters degree in Education from Texas A&M University at Commerce. She taught art for eleven years at Pittsburg Junior High while also teaching ceramics, Art Appreciation and Art History at Northeast Texas Community College. As a child I was always fascinated by adornment, whether it was illustrations in a book or in an artwork or on stage in the theatre. One of my earliest memories was touring backstage at the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland Oregon and seeing the costuming and jewelry for The Taming of the Shrew. The textures and colors drew me in and I did not want to leave. I grew up haunting the library stacks for books on art and art history, costuming and classic tales. In museums the collections of jewelry always call to me. Even though the pieces are behind glass and cannot be touched, at one time they were made, given, worn, admired, cherished, perhaps even stolen by individuals through the years, and if they could talk they would have long stories to tell. All of my work is hand fabricated using sterling silver both semi-precious and precious gemstones. Working with sheet and wire, I use traditional filigree metalsmithing techniques to form each piece. Not only do I enjoy the challenge of hand fabrication, but also feel immense satisfaction knowing that each of my pieces is truly unique. As I work, I like to think of all the possibilities that the future holds for my pieces as they go out into the world to be worn, enjoyed, and passed down to future generations. I have been playing with clay for the past 29 years. Every day that I get to work in the medium is a joy. I always hope that a piece will speak to a person and they can take it home and enjoy it as I do.
